The Perfect Native for Privacy, Wildlife, and Low-Maintenance Beauty

Looking for a versatile native plant that ticks all the boxes for New Zealand gardens? Pittosporum tenuifolium, also known as Kōhūhū, is an outstanding choice for hedging, privacy screens, and biodiversity enhancement. With its striking foliage, fast-growing nature, and resilience, it’s no wonder Kōhūhū has become a popular pick in both residential and restoration planting across Aotearoa.

Origin & Cultural Significance of Kōhūhū

Kōhūhū is a native evergreen tree or shrub that naturally occurs throughout the North and South Islands of New Zealand. In Māori tradition, it is recognised not only for its beauty but also for its hardy spirit. The Kohuhu is also the unofficial flower of New Zealand. A sprig of kōhūhū was traditionally used by tohunga (spiritual experts) during important ceremonies, including childbirth and rituals to lift tapu (sacred restrictions).

Where It Grows Best

Kōhūhū is highly adaptable and flourishes in a variety of soil types, from clay to sandy loams. Kōhūhū (Pittosporum tenuifolium) thrives across a range of New Zealand environments—from coastal zones and lower montane forests to the drier eastern slopes of the Southern Alps, reaching elevations up to 900 metres. Its adaptability has also made it successful in parts of the UK, including southern England. Widely favoured for its elegant form and resilience, Kōhūhū is a popular choice for ornamental gardens and landscaping projects.

It is well-suited to:

  • Coastal and inland gardens

  • Lowland forests and regenerating bush

  • Urban environments, particularly as a shelterbelt or screen

Top Tip - This species tolerates wind, drought, and even some salt exposure, making it ideal for challenging sites.

Planting Guide

  • When to Plant: Best planted in autumn or early spring when soil temperatures are mild.

  • Spacing: For dense hedging, space plants approx. 1 metre apart.

  • Soil & Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Ensure well-drained soil.

  • Mulching: Apply mulch at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds during establishment.

Top Tip: Boost your plant’s success by mixing compost into the soil to enhance drainage and structure. Dig a hole twice as wide and deep as the root ball, then plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the ground. Finish with a generous watering to help settle the roots.

Wildlife BenefitsKōhūhū (Pittosporum tenuifolium) is a valuable native that supports local biodiversity by offering both food and shelter to wildlife.

Its dense, evergreen foliage creates a safe haven for birds and insects, while its small, nectar-rich flowers and fruit serve as an important food source. By attracting and sustaining a variety of native species, kōhūhū plays a vital role in enriching and balancing natural ecosystems.

Care & Maintenance

One of the key advantages of Pittosporum tenuifolium is how low-maintenance it is:

  • Pruning: Regular light trimming encourages bushiness and helps maintain a tidy hedge. Can be shaped formally or allowed to grow naturally.

  • Watering: Once established, Kōhūhū is drought-tolerant. Water young plants during dry spells.

  • Pests & Diseases: Naturally resistant to most pests and diseases. Check occasionally for scale or aphids, particularly in dense plantings.

Top Tip: Water consistently during the first year to help roots establish, but avoid overwatering, as soggy soil can cause root rot. A light prune in late winter or early spring will encourage fresh, healthy growth, while feeding with a balanced fertiliser in spring—and a nitrogen-rich boost during the growing season—will keep your plant thriving.

Why Choose Pittosporum tenuifolium for Your Native Garden?

  • Fast-growing and easy to manage

  • Native and ecologically beneficial

  • Great for urban gardens, restoration projects, and lifestyle blocks

  • Elegant silvery-green foliage adds year-round visual interest

Whether you're starting a native hedge, creating privacy for your property, or supporting local biodiversity, Kōhūhū is a standout species that brings beauty and balance to any landscape.
