New Zealand's Coastline
Protecting vulnerable coastal areas is inspiring, and it’s a powerful reminder of how community action can make a lasting environmental impact.

Across New Zealand’s coastline, dedicated conservation groups are working tirelessly to protect fragile ecosystems, restore native habitats and ensure future generations can experience the unique beauty of our natural environment. One organisation making a significant difference on the East Coast is the East Coast Protection Group (ECPG), a passionate community-led initiative focused on protecting coastal landscapes and restoring native biodiversity.

At Native Restorations, we have been honoured to contribute to some of this work alongside ECPG. Their commitment to protecting vulnerable coastal areas is inspiring, and it’s a powerful reminder of how community action can make a lasting environmental impact.

Who Are the East Coast Protection Group?

The East Coast Protection Group (ECPG) is a volunteer-driven organisation dedicated to safeguarding coastal environments through restoration, pest management and habitat protection.

Their work focuses on protecting vulnerable coastal ecosystems that support a wide range of native plants, birds and wildlife. We know first-hand that these areas often face ongoing pressure from invasive plant species, pest animals, erosion and human activity. Without active management and restoration, many of these habitats can rapidly decline.

Through coordinated volunteer efforts, partnerships and community support, ECPG works to reverse this trend, restoring natural habitats and strengthening biodiversity along the coastline.

The group also places strong emphasis on community involvement, encouraging locals, landowners and supporters to take part in protecting the environment they care about.

"The ECPG are a passionate group of volunteers who have grown up or farmed in this area and really want to restore the natural treasures of the limestone coastline from the Waima to Marfells beach,” says Will Parsons, from the East Coast Protection Group.

Why Coastal Conservation Matters

Coastal environments are some of the most dynamic ecosystems in New Zealand. They provide essential habitats for native species while also acting as natural barriers that protect inland areas from storms, erosion and sea-level changes.

However, coastal landscapes are also particularly vulnerable to environmental pressures. Invasive plant species can quickly overrun native vegetation, reducing biodiversity and weakening the natural resilience of these ecosystems.

Invasive vines such as banana passionfruit and old man’s beard, along with aggressive weeds and pest plants, can smother native species and alter entire landscapes if left unchecked.

This is where restoration groups like ECPG play a crucial role.

Through weed control, native planting and habitat restoration, they help rebuild the natural balance of these environments.

Native Restorations’ Role in Supporting Coastal Protection

At Native Restorations, we have had the privilege of working alongside ECPG to support their efforts to restore and protect coastal ecosystems.

Our work has included practical conservation services that help manage invasive species and prepare areas for native regeneration.

This includes:

  • Scrub cutting and site preparation to clear invasive vegetation

  • Pest plant control targeting aggressive invasive species

  • Native planting support to encourage regeneration of local species

  • Ongoing restoration maintenance to ensure long-term success

These efforts help create the conditions needed for native plants and wildlife to thrive again.

Every restoration project is different, but the goal is always the same: to give native ecosystems the best possible chance to recover and flourish.

"Without the support of groups like Native Restorations, volunteers, schools and sponsors much of this would be impossible so education is imperative of community for this unique coastline."

The Power of Community Conservation

One of the most impressive aspects of ECPG’s work is the level of community involvement behind it.

Conservation projects of this scale require many hands, from volunteers planting trees and monitoring wildlife to supporters providing financial contributions that help fund restoration work.

Community groups like ECPG demonstrate what can be achieved when people come together with a shared goal of protecting the natural world.

Their work is not only improving the health of coastal ecosystems but also strengthening local connections to the environment.

Why Donations and Support Are Vital

Like many conservation organisations, ECPG relies heavily on donations, sponsorship and volunteer support to continue its important work.

Funding helps provide essential resources such as:

  • Native plants for restoration projects

  • Tools and equipment for volunteers

  • Pest control and weed management programmes

  • Environmental monitoring and research

Every contribution helps expand the reach of their restoration efforts.

Even small donations can help support projects that make a lasting difference for native wildlife and coastal habitats.

If you’re passionate about protecting New Zealand’s natural environment, supporting ECPG is a meaningful way to contribute.

Protecting Our Coastlines for Future Generations

The work being done by the East Coast Protection Group is a powerful example of how local action can protect and restore our natural landscapes.

At Native Restorations, we are proud to support initiatives that prioritise biodiversity, environmental stewardship and long-term ecosystem health.

By working together, landowners, conservation groups, volunteers and restoration professionals, we can ensure that New Zealand’s coastal environments remain vibrant and thriving for generations to come.

"The kiosk board we created with Rangitane o Wairau and sponsored by 'The Better Half' wine company paints a picture of the unique features of this landscape, portraying the fauna and flora, past and present and the marine environment, telling us why protection, trapping, education and planting are important."
